A child is born with a mismatch between brain and body. As that child grows, he has to struggle with the knowledge that he is different, that difference causing an internal churning and anguish, but that difference also causes dislocation between peer group and school. As that child struggled so he gripped tightly the hand of the only person he could confide in, the person he called God, or Jesus when he simply prayed.
As an adult, successful and full of pride he let go of that hand, he thought he did not need it anymore until in the deepest distress he reached out once more.
With God’s strength beside him, he asked the question why, what was causing so much internal anguish. The reply both surprised him and revolted him, and he slid into a world of deceit, of self-disgust and loathing. Only the firm hand of Jesus guiding him through the morass kept him from self-destruction, and he was able to move into the light and seek the support of his wife, the person he loved most.
Together they travelled the journey, where he, now she, travelled into a world of peace and calm, both directed so clearly and forcefully by the hand of Jesus which so firmly grasped them.
This is finally a love story, a story of God’s love that blesses both, of a love between two people that refused to be broken, and of a love for Jesus as their faith allowed them to both tread an improbable journey.

I am a former travel writer to historical places and also the author of another book where my partner and I undertook an extraordinary journey to rid myself of a life-affecting illness. This book is an autobiographical account of Jesus holding my hand as I trod a path of self-doubt, sometimes self-loathing, to find brilliant happiness. A testament to the power of God working in our lives.
